Basic Principles of the Montessori Method
The Montessori educational pedagogy, created by Maria Montessori, focuses on children's learning by respecting their natural development. To develop their skills, the environment must be appropriate for their age and development, characterized by four basic principles of the Montessori method. The method promotes exploration, collaboration, concentration, communication, play, discovery, and above all, free exploration.
Absorbent mind of children: they have the innate ability to receive, process, and store in brain cells, effortlessly, everything from the environment around them.
Learning area: in a Montessori classroom, spaces are divided into different areas, corresponding to the five key learning areas:
- Practical
- Sensorial
- Language
- Mathematics
- Culture
Sensitive periods: these are periods when the child shows a special interest or enthusiasm for learning a specific area. These sensitive periods are also called "windows of learning."
Normalization: this is the process by which the child gradually achieves order, self-discipline, and socialization, meaning the ability to appreciate, respect, and collaborate with others.
Prepared environment: this is the environment in which the child develops, including the physical space, the people the child interacts with, and the activities and guidelines set in that space.
